According to CNBC, World Emoji Day was “the brainchild Jeremy Burge”, which states that Emojipedia’s founder in London, Emojipedia, created it in 2014.
According to The New York Times, Burge created it on 17 July “based upon the way that the calendar emojis are shown on iPhones”. Burge also told The Independent that there were no plans other than picking the date. The Washington Post suggested that in 2018, readers should use this day to “communicate only with emoji.”
NBC reported that Twitter’s top-trending item was the day on 17 July 2015.
Google altered the Unicode character’s appearance to display 17 Jul on Android, Gmail and Hangouts in 2016. This was done to avoid confusion around World Emoji Day.
Apple has used every World Emoji Day since 2017 to announce future expansions to its emojis in iOS.

London’s Royal Opera House presented 20 operas, ballets, and songs in emoji format. Google also announced the end to its “blob-emojis”, and the winners of the World Emoji Awards were announced on the New York Stock Exchange trading floor.
Kim Kardashian launched her Kimoji fragrance line in 2018, Apple previewed new Emoji designs, including redheads, and replaced executive photos with emojis on its corporate leadership page. Google announced the return to sticker form of “blob Emojis”, while Facebook stated that “700 million” emojis are used each day in Facebook posts.
